Contemporary
June 15, 2015Contemporary is a more playful version of modern. It’s a great option for those who love sleek lines, solid silhouettes and a near zen-like simplicity.
Wood can be quite at home in this style. The grain of the wood is either minimized to keep the focus on simple shapes, or highlighted to emphasize the lines, even sometimes turned horizontally to compliment the lines of the counter tops. Doors are most often Shaker or slab style with either subtle, inset or bar-style hardware, if any.
Warm colors and natural materials can soften the modern spirit of this style. Contemporary has been making inroads to newer countertop options like glass and concrete. Their flexible approach to design works well with these equally flexible materials.
Smooth finishes are a big part of what keeps the modern flavor in contemporary style. Stainless steel appliances are a particularly good match for this look, as are tile backsplashes. Tile can also be a great means of bringing more color and texture into an otherwise smooth room. Sleek cabinetry is a perfect frame for a backsplash that highlights beautiful materials or the homeowner’s personality.
Minimal decoration directs a sharper focus on the pieces you’ve chosen to highlight. Simple lines emphasize a feeling of open space, good for relaxation. Polished metals, glossy lacquer, tile and glass are smooth and shiny elements. Your furniture and lighting will have a very active role in determining the feel of your space.
Stainless steel is for more than just appliance finishes in contemporary kitchens, and can invoke a more industrial feel. Industrial is the style where rustic meets modern. Stainless or textured steel, rope, and rough or reclaimed wood all are mainstays of the industrial style.
